Ever hit play on a course video, see it’s 45 minutes long—and instantly feel tired?
Yep. Your learners feel that too. And it might be the reason they’re not finishing your course.
Why Long Videos Don’t Work
Even with amazing content, long videos can feel overwhelming.
Learners pause halfway through, lose momentum, and often don’t return.
Life happens—kids interrupt, dogs bark, focus drifts—and your beautifully designed lesson goes unfinished.
The Fix: Chunk It
Instead of one long 45-minute video, break it into 3 shorter clips, each focused on one idea or action.
In learning design, we call this chunking—the practice of breaking long content into smaller, more digestible parts. You can also add “mental breaks” or redirections within longer videos, but shorter clips make everything easier to access, watch, and retain.

Why This Works: The 10-Minute Rule
Most people can only focus for about 10 minutes before attention starts to wander.
Short videos make it easier to re-engage, pause, and return without losing the thread.
💡 Imagine This:
You’re running your business and homeschooling your kids.
You carve out 45 minutes to watch your course.
You hit play… Kid One has questions. Kid Two finishes early.
You forget to pause. Now you’re lost—and frustrated.
Wouldn’t it be easier to jump back into a clear 10-minute segment?
Benefits of Shorter Lessons
- Learners feel more progress and momentum
- It’s easier to rewatch just the parts they need
- Retention and application improve
- It’s easier for you to tweak or update later
(Need to re-record lesson 3? No problem. You don’t have to touch lessons 1 and 2.)

How to Break It Down
- Start with the end goal
→ What’s the core transformation or outcome? - Identify milestones
→ What key steps or ideas move them from A to B? - Make each a separate video
→ One idea. One action. One video.
This structure also makes space for check-ins, feedback prompts, and action steps—each boosting engagement and reinforcing that you care about your learners’ success.
Your Turn
What’s one lesson in your course (or talk or mastermind replay) that could be broken into smaller parts?
Drop it in the comments—let’s brainstorm how to make it better.
