Is Your Course Solving the Right Problem?

Are you building a course around what you want to teach—or what your audience is actively searching for help with?

This one shift could be the reason your course isn’t getting the engagement, sign-ups, or results you hoped for. The good news? It’s a fixable problem—and I’ll show you how.

Let’s Get You Unstuck

Hi! I’m Renee, a learning design strategist with a background in anthropology and education. I help creative, purpose-driven women turn their brilliant ideas into courses that truly serve—and actually sell.

If you’ve ever felt unsure whether your course idea will land, this post is for you.

Here’s the Truth: The Best Courses Solve a Known Problem

The most effective, high-converting online courses don’t just sound exciting—they solve a challenge your learner is already aware of and actively looking to fix.

That means letting go of the idea that what you want to teach is automatically what your audience needs right now.

A Quick Story (And a Powerful Lesson)

Let me introduce you to Jane, a social media strategist. She created a beautiful course full of caption templates, content prompts, and strategy frameworks. She poured her heart into it.

But when she launched her beta round, the feedback was eye-opening.

Her audience didn’t need how to write posts—they were stuck on who they were online. They hadn’t yet found their authentic voice.

The course was valuable, but it was a step too far ahead.

So Jane made a simple but powerful pivot. She added a new course entirely focused on finding your voice—exploring values, messaging, and identity. The shift worked. Suddenly, students felt seen. One even said, “This finally feels like me.”

Is This Why Your Course Feels Off?

If your course isn’t landing like you hoped, don’t panic. Take a step back and ask:

Am I solving the right problem—or just the one I’m most familiar with?

Here’s how to check.

3 Steps to Make Sure Your Course Solves the Right Problem

1. Write Down 3 Common Struggles Your Audience Faces

Think about those early conversations—in the DMs, on discovery calls, or from your own experience. What do they say they’re struggling with before they work with you?

2. Ask: Does Your Course Solve One of Those Problems?

Not all three. Just one. Is the course you’re building (or already launched) directly addressing one of those real, present-moment challenges?

3. Validate It with Your Audience

It’s easier than you think. Try:

  • A quick Instagram poll: “Which of these is your biggest challenge right now?”
  • A simple DM: “When you first found me, what were you hoping I could help with?”
  • Or a post asking: “What’s something you’re stuck on right now?”

This tiny bit of validation can completely shift how you approach your course and how your audience responds to your offer.

Final Thought: Clarity Creates Connection

When your course solves the right problem, everything gets easier—your messaging gets tighter, your audience gets more engaged, and your sales feel natural instead of forced.
